Hehuanshan 合歡山 also known as Snow Mountain is located in Central Taiwan. It offers one the best place for snow fall every winter season. The peak lies on the borders of Nantou and Hualien counties and is located within Taroko National Park.
Hehuanshan is a popular destination in central Taiwan. The 3,421-metre east peak and 3,422-metre north peak of Hehuanshan are both higher than the main peak. Snow, rare in the rest of Taiwan, is relatively common on Mount Hehuan during the winter months. Highway 14 leads to Wuling, a saddle between the main peak and the east peak of Hehuanshan. At 3,275-metre, Wuling is also the highest point of Taiwan accessible by highway. From Highway 14, a trail leads to the summit of the main peak. At the summit, there is a weather station.
Most countries do not possess mountains higher than three thousand meters. Even if they do, visitors still have to climb having to carry heavy equipment with them in order to get on the clouds. However here in Taiwan, it only takes around three-hour drive from the downtown to reach Wuling, a mountain at an altitude of 3275 meters. Another hour of hiking brings visitors to Hehuan Main Peak, where clouds gather on the ridges. Before the sun sinks into sea of clouds, afterglow of the sun makes a red sky.
How to get there?
From Taipei Main Station, you can take the High-speed rail to Taichung Station, ride
a bus to Qingjing Farm and book a taxi to get up there or you can take a bus at Taipei Main Station directly bound to Hehuanshan. If you plan to visit by group, I highly recommend renting a car from Taipei as it will not only save your time and effort but it will let you enjoy the trip more because you can stop the car anywhere along the road and take pictures since there are a lot of beautiful scenic spot that you will be passing through along the way. The trip will take around 3-4 hours.
