This summary is very accurate. Taiwanese languages indeed have evolved. You often see comments among Taiwanese which are only intelligible to themselves. Now People have the freedom to choose an official language for the first time in history. I hope that they realize the importance of English and make a commitment to integrate it into the culture.

Thank you for the video! A great summary of Taiwan's cultural composition. A minor criticism: You left out Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Taiwan has had significant interaction with these three countries for decades, and the impact from these countries to Taiwan is quite palpable. Hope you can address this issue in the future. Thank you!

Most countries in the world are influenced by other cultures. Egypt for instance had foreigners building pyramid, and they were occupied by the Romans and the Arabs. So you can see different cultural influences in Egypt. Great Britain had kings and Queens from Germany and France.China may have a continuous culture, but it was influenced by India heavily. So in this case, Taiwan is not that special.

Interesting and informative as always. From my experiences of Taiwan you have summed up everything very well. I look forward to the next video 👍👍

My experience in Taipei, food was quite mild. In the South like Kaosiung food seemed to have stronger flavors. Songs from Taiwan 25-30 years ago were very good, such classics like Dave Wang's "Yi Chang You Xi Yi Chang Meng" and Wakin Chau's various songs. I haven't caught up with the current trend in music but I hope it doesn't get much influence from Korean music. Whenever I go to a Korean restaurant here in the US, songs by male singers sound all the same–kind of high pitch with a lot of falsetto. And Korean culture likes to make all females look the same–pale face with red or orange lipstick. The Chinese entertainment industry seems to embrace this trend full on that people who grew up watching series and movies from Hong Kong and Taiwan have a hard time distinguishing female characters or remembering their faces.

I feel like I didn't have time to digest the info as you talked quite fast and moved on from one point to another quickly with no breaks in between at all. May I suggest that you slow down a bit and pause every now and then to give viewers time to digest what you've just talked about and think about it a little bit more in your future videos? Good info and observations though.

Ni Hao Nathan. Xie Xie for the video. Just wanted to say that Taiwan has some of the coolest influences in the world. I visited 10 years ago for a few months. From the USA. I went to an elementary school; had some awesome friends I would like to see again someday. In my opinion Taiwan isn't just influenced by countries the people who go there also get influenced by them. I'm considering to study abroad there someday and I promised my friends id go back to see them. Thing is only a few may notice. I value friendship and family over everything and I think Taiwan will always be one of the best memories I've ever experienced during childhood. I do try to take studying seriously too. Mom and Dad found me an awesome school that spoke English and Chinese and it was amazing to learn what it's like to be at a school like. Helping serve food was the best part! I want to thank all my friends there if they see this comment.

What you said about the food is agreeable I love the food there. Beef Noodle Soup is my favorite food there. I'm a fan of several different kinds of music (Kpop being one of my favorite genres these days.) Never seen Korean Dramas but I remember watching anime-like cartoons and some American tv shows. My favorite thing about Taiwan is that I can meet really cool friends to make sure I'm doing good. The host family that lived downstairs from my family was the coolest family I ever met.

Can you make a video for people who consider studying abroad? And maybe one for people who have disabilities like Autism or something similar (I have Autism and it's been great to have the disability). That would be awesome

For a period in the past, the Dutch ruled South Africa and Formosa/Taiwan at the same time.

Two metric systems still used for land area everyday in Taiwan are 坪Ping and 甲Jia. Its influence from Japan and the Dutch.

Actually Chinese culture has a way more gigantic impact on Taiwan, not only in the negative side. Media such as songs, soap operas and movies are also popular here. The Netherlands did stay here for some years, but the Qing dynasty had stayed much longer. They first brought their original beliefs and lifestyles, then they even developed their own.

As a result of Taiwan’s multicultural background and history, they are very welcoming to “Lao-wai.” Im from New York and not Chinese but I speak fluent Chinese. When I’m w Chinese from China , they always ask a million questions about how and why I speak Chinese. When I’m in Taiwan, they just treat me as a friend and welcome me. And don’t ask me a million questions. And they don’t stare at me. And I LIKE IT LIKE THIS.

Frankly, multiculturalism has become a dirty word in the West. I suggest that Taiwan stay as homogeneous as possible, with very strict restrictions on who is allowed into the country. That is not to say that those beneficial aspects from the West and other culture shouldn't be entertained, but the dominate culture has to be Taiwanese. And those coming to Taiwan to live have to understand that fact. We now have a situation in the West where invading cultures are attempting to replace the original traditions and culture of the countries they have migrated to. Multiculturalism is a failure.

One of my classmates looks obviously the mixture of western people and Taiwanese. His skin looks the combination of red and yellow. He is from Tainan. I'm pretty sure he is the descendant of Dutch people . Another classmate in graduated school once told me you could find Dutch offspring easily in a certain area in Tainan.
